Can the Atom be used on the road?
Yes. Select the road pack option for your Atom 2 and it will be fully road legal.
Where is the Atom constructed?
The Atom is a fully-imported all-new production car constructed in Ariel Motor Company’s factory in Somerset, UK. Each car is individually tested and signed off by designer Simon Saunders.
When will I receive an ordered Atom?
We’re now taking orders for custom vehicles to be delivered this summer. We’ll advise a delivery date for your vehicle, typically 12-16 weeks from placement of your order. We may also have a vehicle in stock that’s perfect for your intended use, or you can own our demonstrator. The delivery itself is from Custom Fleet’s showroom in Auckland or optionally to your door New Zealand-wide.
Why does the price of an Atom appear to change?
Custom-built Atoms are purchased direct from Ariel in GBP at UK listed prices – you can’t get a better price on Atoms anywhere in the world. Prices listed on this site are estimates of the landed on-road cost of your custom vehicle at the current exchange rate (see The Fine Print). With the increasingly strong Kiwi dollar, this makes for even better value on your Atom.
What engine choices do I have?
The standard engine in the Atom 2 is an all-new 2.0L Honda 160 BHP (116 kW) i-VTEC powerplant from the Civic Type S. Mated to a 5-speed gearbox, the high-performance Atom 2 has a power-to-weight of around 300 BHP/tonne and a 0-100 time of 4.5s. Also available as an option is the barnstorming 220 BHP (164 kW) engine and 6-speed box from the Civic Type-R. With maximum power at 8200 RPM, the 220 BHP car roars from 0-100 in 3.7s – performance that embarrasses supercars. Both engines are mechanically unchanged for reliability and are packaged with a ram air box, fabricated 4-2-1 manifold and silencer.
There is so much torque on tap that a 220 BHP Atom 2 can be started from idle … in 6th gear. The handbrake is never used for hill starts – just idle away in first, second or third. The Atom 2 pulls strongly from 2000 revs so cruising around town is very comfortable in 5th or 6th.
What colours are available?
You have choice of yellow, black, red, green, blue or as an option a custom colour scheme. We can also assist locally by recommending an experienced signwriter for professional display of your companyplacing your logo on your vehicle.
Do you provide vehicle finance?
Yes. We can provide hire purchase finance on your Ariel Atom 2. This is especially useful for business owners who wish to promote their business through their car – each payment may be a tax deduction to your business.
Is full insurance available for the Atom?
Yes. Full insurance is easily obtained and for most owners will fall in the $500-1000 price bracket.
Will I fit into the Atom?
People up to 6′ 7″ in height and over 125kg in weight have driven the Atom without difficulty – there’s a lot more room in an Atom than the average performance car. You can, however, have your Atom personalised for fit if this is beneficial to you. Justin Wilson, 6’3″, drives Ariel’s demonstrator below.
How comfortable is the Atom?
You can spend hours in the Atom on everyday roads and want to get straight back in it when you’re finished. The Atom has easy access and is very comfortable – the seat design and driving position are superb.
How adjustable is the Atom?
As adjustable as you need it. The seat moves back and forth with choice of five seating positions, throttle fore-aft position is easily adjusted for heel & toe setup and it’s an inexpensive exercise to modify clutch pedal travel, fit a left foot rest or move the steering wheel closer or further from the driver.
Can the Atom be driven in the wet?
Yes, and it’s lots of fun. The Atom is fully waterproofed, so the driver and passenger just waterproof themselves. Except in the heaviest rain, occupants typically get wet only from the shoulders upward so a helmet and jacket is all that’s required. Chassis side panels are also an option.
Where can I get my Atom serviced?
The Atom is simple to service and many owners will want to do this themselves. We can also recommend a workshop to you – in Auckland, Road Race & Rally in Penrose will look after you professionally. Spare parts can be sourced from OWI, Ariel or the component manufacturers directly.
Can I compete in my Atom?
Yes. The Atom is a race car that has been designed for the road, not the other way around. With the reliability of Honda power, tyres and clutch forgiven by the light weight and no body panels to bend, the Atom is a less expensive race or track car to run than most. Talk to us about your intended competition and we’ll provide advice on homologation and competitiveness. Rollover bars, roll cages, aerofoils, integrated fire exinguishers, side panels, cat bypass pipes and a host of performance racing options are available. The Atom is a seriously quick car.

How experienced must Atom drivers be?
The factory setup for the Atom allows it to be driven safely by any competent driver. The chassis dynamics, however, allow it to be enjoyed at the highest of skill levels. We can provide training and support for setting up your car for road, track or racing use.
How quick does the Atom feel?
Unlike closed sedans, the wind in your face and lower seating position contributes to an extraordinary sensation of speed. As the NZ Herald said, “…even 90km/h provides an incredible adrenalin rush”. So if want to have fun and still keep your licence then the Atom’s just the ticket (no pun intended).
How do I talk with the passenger when wearing helmets?
Using a motorcycle intercom. Basically this is a sophisticated setup with a microphone and speakers in each helmet. We use and sell Autocom intercoms which allow crystal-clear speech between driver and passenger as well as input from two accessories – a mobile phone and an MP3 player, say. The Atom also has a spare 12V power supply for running other devices.
Do the driver and passenger have to wear helmets?
No, wearing impact-resistant sunglasses and a grin is the best way to experience a low speed cruise in the Atom, and we can supply you with glasses that seal around your eyes. For open-road speeds and driving in the wet, however, you’ll prefer wearing a helmet which suits the feel of the car perfectly.
Is there any storage space in the Atom?
Yes, under the coloured nose cone is a small space to take personal items, an exterior car cover or even the removable headlights when you hit the track.
